1.

A pair of Aussie-adored, beat-’em-into-the-ground Blundstones that’ll still bounce back after countless romps through mud puddles, snowbanks, and even cow manure.

Blundstone, instagram.com

I’ve had the 1615s for a few months now and I basically wear them every day. They don’t have a break-in period (in my experience, anyways), they run true to size, and aside from being tough as nails, the best part is how lightweight they are. As someone who is guilty of dragging their feet, that last part prevents lots of trips and falls!

Promising review: “I kept these boots in my cart for nearly a month because I was hesitant to spend $200 on another pair of shoes. But they don’t lie when they say the best things are worth the wait (whoever the heck ‘they’ are). I put them on as soon as I got them and I may even wear them to bed. They’re incredibly comfortable and feel like they’ll last as long as a $200 pair of boots should. They’re true to size. The ankle part is a bit snug but the tabs on either end help to pull them on and I’m sure they’ll loosen up with time. This is my first Amazon review all just to tell you to buy these boots. Update: I’ve had these boots for a few months now and they have loosened up just swell and I’m still wearing them even when it’s hot as heck and my ankles are sweating.” —Brandy

Get them from Amazon for $77.91+ (available in sizes 5–14 and in five colors).

Or a pair of Dr. Martens which can not only keep up with daily wear for more than a decade (I attest to this!) but also add some serious edge to your silk midi skirt + sweater combo.

Two models wearing the 1460s in smooth black leather

Doc Martens

I am obsessed with Dr. Martens — thanks, in part, to four years at a Doc-lovin’ liberal arts college. I own a shameful amount of Chelseas, platforms, and 1460s — some of which I’ve retired but will never have the heart to part with. These boots last foreverrrrrrr. And the ones I don’t wear anymore are still in perfectly good shape, they’re just from phases I’ve grown out of (namely florals). My favorite ones I’ve been wearing for 10 years now and the soles and leather are still in incredible condition. You will, of course, have to go through the dreaded break-in period (wear multiple pairs of socks AND Band-Aids!) but once that’s over, you’ll forget all about the pain.

Promising review: “Bought my first pair of eight holes in the late ’80s. The love is still strong 30 years later with the purchase of green eight holes!” —Carl B.

Get them from Dr. Martens for $150 (available in sizes 5–12 and in 12 colors).

An American Giant hoodie with reinforced elbow patches, a double-lined hood, double-stitched heavyweight fleece, and custom metal zippers, grommets, and drawstring tips.

American Giant / Sarah Kehoe

If you haven’t heard of them, American Giant is a brand that operates out of San Francisco and produces all of its apparel between California and North Carolina. The company strives to create clothing that’s “durable, not disposable” and this popular hoodie — which was designed by a former Apple engineer — shows just what a commitment they’ve made.

Promising review: “I absolutely love the new hoodie I recently purchased from American Giant. It’s the fourth one I’ve purchased as I keep giving them away. People love them so much and practically take them off my back. Anyway, I work in industrial safety sales and this is the perfect everyday hoodie when I’m visiting accounts. Some superintendents/foremen on construction sites have even noticed the brand and commented on the fact that it’s American made which I think is cool. The fact that it’s made in America matters a lot to me. The quality is like nothing else out there. Thank you American Giant!” —Rachel H.

Get it from American Giant for $112 (available in sizes XS–XL and in four colors).

A pair of comfy-as-can-be Crocs which — in the world of BuzzFeed writers and editors — are extremely en vogue! Whether you need shower shoes for your dorm, clogs for gardening, or something you can slip into sport mode when you run errands, these bad boys are the answer.

amazon.com, amazon.com

Suggestion: a pair of “family Crocs.” For my family (hi, Zack + Izzy!), this means an oversized set that sit by the door, fit every member of the household, and can be slipped on for trips to the mail box, walks with the dog, and short strolls to the patio to flip whatever is on the grill.

Promising review: “Classically ugly, weird looking clown shoes that everyone — including me — loves to make fun of. And yet, within five minutes of getting home for the night, I’m wearing these. They’re comfortable, well ventilated enough to let my feet air out (foot funk is truly nasty), and don’t slip off as easily with the strap in back. They’re also durable; I’ve had this pair for five years and while they show some wear, they’re still comfortable.” —Goth Gone Grey

Get them from Amazon for $28.23+ (available in sizes 4–19 and in 26 colors).

A cult-favorite Outdoor Voices Exercise dress capable of keeping up with everyday life thanks to its breathable nylon and spandex design which also conceals a pair of built-in shorts with a cellphone pocket!

Outdoor Voices

Obvi it’s great for balmy days, but some reviewers say they even wear it during colder months by layering it with a sweater.

Promising review: “I simply don’t have enough good things to say about this dress. If you’re looking for a sign to buy it, this is it. I have it in black and just bought it in red, too. I wear it on errands, chilling in my house, trail running, hiking. It’s my favorite thing to wear when I’m going out. This dress will make you wanna dance and be silly and just have fun — and when you wear it, you do. This dress will make you wanna flirt, it’ll make people flirt with you. This dress gives you superpowers — I’m not kidding.” —Bea

A pair of low-stretch Levi’s Wedgie fit jeans that will have you breaking your back to check out your tush in every reflective surface you pass. Yes, they’re that good!

Levi’s

When I slipped into these babies for the first time I couldn’t believe my eyes. As someone with a larger butt and smaller waist, I’m accustomed to gaping and bunching in all the wrong areas but these fit like a glove and gave my backside just a lil’ lift. They also hold their shape throughout the day so you don’t have to hike them up or worry about a saggy bottom.

Get them from Levi’s for $98 (available in sizes 23–32 and in 10 washes).

Literally anything from Universal Standard but I really gotta give it up for the Everest hooded puffer in particular. In a nutshell, wearing this coat is like wrapping up in the coziest, warmest, ~chicest~ sleeping bag imaginable.

Universal Standard, BuzzFeed / Chelsea Stuart

This has been my coat of choice this winter and I think that’ll ring true for years to come. First, I love the brand. It’s woman-founded and size inclusive — two things I can certainly get behind. Of course, it’s also just a freakin’ great coat. Aside from being exceptionally warm, I LOVE the buttons on the sides which — when undone — allow for extra airflow or leg room when you’re sitting. I’m 5’6″ (and a half!) and the coat hits me about mid-shin which means I can wear basically anything to the grocery store — AKA ratty PJ pants — and no one is the wiser. I know that’s the least of most peoples’ worries when shopping for a winter coat but now that we’re all living through a pandemic together, I think ya get how that’s an added bonus.

PS: I found that the coat runs large. I’m usually a 10/12 and was able to go down a full size and still have plenty of room for multiple layers and a slightly oversized look.

Promising review: “I’m Canadian and so far it’s been plenty warm! The caramel color is perfect; the fit, cut, material, details, sleeves, hood, pockets are perfect. It’s soft and comfy but structured, warm but still layer-friendly. 10/10!” —Gabrielle L.

Get it from Universal Standard for $285 (available in sizes 00–40 and in four colors).

A button-back Madewell blouse made from cotton and Tencel — a eucalyptus-derived fabric that’s not only soft, but super durable.

Madewell

I have this shirt and it’s SO easy to style with jeans, wide-leg pants, you name it. In my experience it does run really large, so I suggest going a full size down (don’t worry, it’ll still be really oversized).

Promising review: “The other reviews aren’t lying. This really is the perfect white top. I wanted an easy top that felt quality, looked quality, but more importantly, wasn’t see through! I teach, so it is really important to have quality shirts that look professional, but allow me to deal with all of the things that come up in a classroom of kids every day and this is actually perfect. It’s soft, the back buttons are super cute, and it is NOT SEE THROUGH! I have never had a white top before where I didn’t need to wear an under shirt. The fabric is thick enough that it is modest, without being rough or stiff. I wore this for three days straight when I first got it. I can see myself buying multiples of this over the years.” —MegT67

Get it from Madewell for $65 (available in sizes XXS–3XL).

Impeccably engineered Swedish Hasbeens clogs which will have you living your ’70s fantasy even if you were born in the ’90s or — oh how it pains me to say this — the aughts.

Models wearing various styles of clogs in different colors

instagram.com

If Docs are my default fall/winter shoe, then Swedish Hasbeens are definitely my spring/summer pick. I have regular ol’ clogs, sky-high chunky sandals, strappy heels, and low-profile everyday peep toes. When I bought my first pair, I was certain they’d only be for days when I felt like dressing up ’cause wearing wooden-soled shoes and having to walk a few miles over the course of my daily NYC commute seemed like pure torture. Turns out I was wrong, though! They’re weirdly easy to walk in, way more comfortable than they look, and they’re a compliment magnet. I’ve had my favorite pair for three or four years now and they’ve taken quite the beating (rain, thousands of subway stairs, cobblestones, etc.) but show little wear.

Promising review: “Sophisticated, elegant, chic — these are the adjectives I give Swedish Hasbeens. First off, they’re exceptionally beautiful and extraordinarily comfortable for clogs! I’ve been wearing clogs since I was a girl growing up in the 70s/80s so I’ve worn so many brands… but none compare to Swedish Hasbeens. The quality alone is ridiculous! I own the Super High Mule in bubblegum pink, nature, and cognac. I also own a few of their open toe wedges/sandals so I’ve now had experience with all of their different style clogs, except for their boots, which I hope to also own one day. I love them all! The craftsmanship is amazing and so stunning; like no other clogs out there and in a variety of styles and heels heights to please everyone. If you’re a true clog lover, try and buy a pair of Swedish Hasbeens once to see the difference.” —Audra Riccitelli

Get them from Amazon for $130.07+ (available in sizes 5–12 and in 19 colors).

An AllSaints leather jacket with classic lapels and simple gunmetal finishings that make it a cinch to style. Like seriously — throw it on over basically anything.

AllSaints

Yes, the jacket is spendy but it’ll truly last you forever since it’s constructed from semi-vegetable dyed leather that wasn’t exposed to chrome during tanning (the popular practice isn’t environmentally friendly and can lead to cracking).

Get it from AllSaints for $450 (available in sizes 00–10).

Some Calvin Klein undies with a long-lasting logo waistband and comfy cotton and modal fabric. No underwear lasts a lifetime (and tbh I don’t think I’d want them to…), but you’ll get your money’s worth out of these.

Amazon

Promising review: “I have been needing underwear for SO long now. I ended up getting these bad boys on sale for 50% off, but I would totally buy them for their market price. These are legitimately the most comfortable underwear I’ve EVER worn. They’re extremely soft, they’re breathable, and they’re completely true to size. My butt has never felt so good!” —Cheyenne Swarthout

Get them from Amazon for $10.99+ (available in sizes XS–3XL and in 19 colors/patterns).

The retro fleece jacket in pelican

Patagonia

Promising review: “My boyfriend got me this jacket for Christmas. At first I was like ‘Oh, it’s cute, but it’s thin,’ and I didn’t think it was anything special. I wore it to the city — and mind you its winter time where I live, roughly around 30 degrees — and I was so SURPRISED how WARM it kept me without having any layers under! I’d say 10/10!! DEF OBSESSED!!!” —Chrissy

Get it from Patagonia for $139 (available in sizes XS–XL and in three colors).

A pair of classic Chuck Taylor All Stars which, IMO, look even better with age. Plus, they marry heritage ’70s details and modern OrthoLite cushioning for extra comfort.

Amazon

Since the sixth grade I have been buying white Converse and then purposely scuffing them, grass-staining them, and breaking them in so they didn’t look so fresh-out-of-the-box new. Each pair has lasted me years and I only throw them away when I either 1). Rip the canvas near my pinky toes or 2). Wear them so much that I thin out the rubber sole to the point I can feel the pavement beneath my heel. Truly no other sneaker has been able to keep up with them and the design is timeless!

Promising review: “Classic. Old favorites. Been wearing these for years and they never go out of style. I get a new pair every few years and donate the old ones since really, even when they’re dirty they’re still totally wearable.” —tpain

Get them from Amazon for $39.97+ (available in sizes 6–11 and in three colors/styles).

A tough-as-nails Carhartt jacket with underarm gussets, stretchy sherpa and fleece lining, and a durable 99% cotton exterior.

Amazon

If there’s any question that Carhartt is long lasting, just consider the fact that construction workers, commercial fisherman, farmers, and more turn to the no-nonsense apparel.

Promising review: “This is the best jacket I’ve ever owned. It is exceptionally comfortable from the first time you put it on. Normally Carhartt seems a bit too tough and bulky and needs to be worn in order to get flexible, but not this jacket. It moves with you and has no restrictions. I could easily put a sweatshirt underneath but could also wear it with a T-shirt and it does not look bulky at all. The back nearly touches the top of my thighs so when you bend over your lower back is never exposed. The sleeves are the perfect length for me and are fitted at the wrist. This jacket is worth the money 100x over again. Highly recommend.” —Katie

Get it from Amazon for $123.50+ (available in sizes XS–3XL and in six colors).

An iconic pair of Bean boots which will lend you some Mainer flair with their triple-stitched leather exterior, rubber chain-tread bottom, and shearling- or plaid-lined interior.

A model wearing the boots with rainbow-colored laces

instagram.com / Via instagram.com

As someone who grew up in New Hampshire, basically *everyone* I know/even briefly came into contact with at the dentist’s office owned a pair of these. And if they’re the winter footwear of choice for people who regularly have to shovel their car out of 40 inches of snow, I think that says something.

Promising review: “I’ve had my boots since I lived in Maine in 1975… They are still in awesome condition, a bit of wear on the outside of the heel but to be expected; tread with hardly any wear spots. Stitching in perfect condition all the way around. Original laces. I added a Thinsulate pair of insoles years ago, and they were a big help in warmth. I feel guilty that I haven’t needed another pair in all these years, so I’m buying another just to have for another 45 years! They are incredibly well made. Wicked good buy.” —Averill Park

Get them from L.L. Bean for $118.15 (originally $139; available in sizes 5–11 narrow, medium, and wide and in two colors).

22.

An adjustable raincoat from sportswear giant Columbia that’ll keep you dry even if it’s draining cats, dogs, and elephants. (I assume that’s the natural progression.)

Amazon, amazon.com

I purchased this jacket a few years ago before a trip to the Peruvian Amazon and it definitely came in clutch. If you’re a frequent traveler, you’ll appreciate not only how easy it is to pack, but that you can actually fold it up into its own pocket and store it in your backpack or purse when you don’t need it.

Promising review: “To be honest, I was a bit skeptical with this jacket. Many reviews mentioned it wasn’t water resistant and it didn’t fit correctly. I decided to take a chance as I needed a light rain coat to take to Japan. Little did I know that a GIANT storm was rolling in before we left. I got a chance to try it out in a Texas thunderstorm, too… Which if you haven’t heard are massive! The jacket fit great! It was a tad tight around my hips but still very comfortable. I am able to put another sweatshirt underneath and still feel comfortable. Now for the functionality. I wore this for two days in the pouring rain and didn’t get wet once! It also did a great job shielding the wind. The hood tucks nicely in the collar and is easy to put in and out. I work in emergency services and it is imperative to have a jacket that is waterproof for crazy storms that pop up. Very lightweight and super easy to throw in my purse just in case.” —Sarah Crain

A pair of cropped Everlane wide-leg pants with a trendy cut, massive pockets (four!), and high-quality cotton construction.

Everlane

I have these pants in three colors and during the before time (when I actually went to an office every day to work) I wore them 24/7. They pair well with all tops and shoes and they hold their shape while still offering a bit of stretch. I love, love, love them and can’t wait for the day I can dust them off and take ’em back out on the town.

Promising review: “I’ve honestly been searching my whole life for that one style of pants that I can buy over and over again. At last I’ve found them! These pants are so comfortable, stylish and they fit like a glove. Needless to say, I have them in three colors. I’ll continue buying these year after year. *P.S. I have these in two different sizes. I recommend sizing down one size for a more fitted feel and staying true to size for a more relaxed fit. Both are great.” —KLMO

Get them from Everlane for $72 (available in sizes 00–16 in short and regular and in four colors).

Promising review: “Over the years I’ve tried many different brands of T-shirts at many different price points trying to find the ‘perfect’ one. This T-shirt may win! It is all cotton, which is dramatically more comfortable in the summer. It has a soft feeling that feels great against your skin. The cotton does not pill over time, which saves you money and allows you to enjoy it longer because it doesn’t look old and worn out. It is thicker than some shirts, which is appreciated because undergarments do not show through and it looks more expensive. I’m picky about collars on T-shirts — the finish and the stitch length — and this brand has a very attractive finish with tight stitching that doesn’t wear poorly over time. Also this T-shirt is a bit longer — not too long — but long enough to provide a little coverage in the back but short enough to tuck in if you like that look. The colors are saturated and stay beautiful. I have a dark gray Eddie Bauer T-shirt I bought easily 10 years ago and it has been washed many times, but still looks sharp and I continue to wear it.” —Elijah

Once you wear through a pair (I’m on year three and it hasn’t happened yet) you can even send them in and have the cork-latex footbed replaced instead of getting a brand new pair.

Promising review: “I have had Birks on and off for many years. I tried to go with a cheaper knockoff, but my last ‘pretend’ pair lasted me five months before they fell apart. I’m now back to the real deal. You can spend $40 and have them last four to six months or buy true quality, spend $130 and have them last three years. And the difference in comfort is night and day! You do the math!?” —Amazon Customer
